EJF Spotlight: Holly Wonneberger

Holly spent her summer working in Brooklyn, NY for the Center for Popular Democracy, a national organization with many successful public interest lawyers. Her work focused on a campaign to keep charter schools accountable. Holly also worked on other areas of public interest, such as immigrants' and workers' rights and community police oversight.

"I learned so much from my experience there, from polishing my legal research and writing skills, deciding the legal feasibility of policy proposals, sitting in on meetings, and even protesting at the Federal Reserve on Wall Street. CPD was a very exciting place to work, and I am so grateful I was able to accept this opportunity with the help of EJF."

EJF Spotlight! Hali Kerr

Hali Kerr, a 2L at GULC, spent the summer after her 1L year working at the Department of Justice, Environment and Natural Resources Division (ENRD), Environmental Defense Section.  The majority of Hali’s projects involved litigation brought against federal agencies under the Clean Water Act; the Clean Air Act; and the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act.  Hali’s involvement with ENRD didn’t end at the office.  While her summer was filled with significant legal matters, she still found time to decompress and join in on ENRD’s softball games.
“It was a really fantastic summer because I had the chance to work on real substantive issues with the nation's largest environmental law "firm" that just happens to represent the U.S.A. That was priceless. Thanks so much to EJF for making it possible!”

Welcome to the Team!

The Equal Justice Foundation at Georgetown University Law Center is proud to welcome all the incoming and returning students back for the fall term! With the new academic year comes a host of talent, ambition, exciting opportunities and dynamic challenges.

Here at EJF we are off to a running start and have the pleasure to introduce a full student board serving the GULC community. This exemplary group generously volunteer their time - furthering the EJF mission to procure the critical funding for students in unpaid public sector work. All made possible by the dedication of these accomplished leaders and the collaborative energy they draw to the organization - networking with faculty, local businesses, alumni and the GULC student body.

Without further ado this year's EJF Board!

Emily Griffith
Equal Justice Foundation Chair
Emily has an extensive background in nonprofit management working in both social justice and environmental sectors. She is also a team member of the Harrison Institute for Public Policy clinic. At GULC her studies are concentrated in environmental policy. As Chair of EJF, Emily aspires to strengthen campus involvement and expand opportunities working in the Public Sector by increasing EJF funding and developing existing organizational relationships. A California native, Emily is all about sunshine and unique collaborative opportunities.

Sierra Walker
Social Media Director
Sierra Walker, a native of Nebraska, earned a Bachelors of Arts in Political Science and Communication Studies at Hastings College with a minor in Spanish. Sierra spent all four years managing social media for the various student groups she was part of on campus as well as working on social media for state political campaigns. While the change from Nebraska to Washington is a big one, after spending a summer here working for a Senator from Nebraska, Sierra knew that she wanted to work in a Congressional office someday. In the mean time, she spends her free time reading all things social justice and pursuing all things nerdy.

Sarah Howard
Fundraising Co-Chair
Sarah has a background in political event planning and political communication, working in both fields prior to beginning law school. As EJF Fundraising Co-Chair, Sarah hopes to increase financial opportunities for students choosing to work in the public sector while also increasing opportunities for all Hoyas to give back to EJF. Although a native Floridian, Sarah is a proud graduate of the University of Arkansas. As such, her hobbies include cheering on the Razorbacks (woo pig!) and staunchly defending all things SEC, ideally over brunch.

Alexander Kramarczuk
Fundraising Co-Chair
Alexander worked with a Minneapolis-based nonprofit organization to empower lower-income individuals and families to become more self-sufficient through integrated services before he enrolled at Georgetown Law. Alexander continues to volunteer his time with organizations as varied as Twin Cities Rise!, CAIR Coalition, and 49 Alaska Writing Center and is excited about bringing his expertise in nonprofits, volunteer management, and fundraising to bear in helping set fundraising records and making this EJF’s most successful year to date.

Austin McCullough
Professor Outreach Co-Chair
Austin has a passion for government and public policy, particularly related to education and juvenile justice issues. As Co-Professor Outreach Chair, he hopes to plug as much of the faculty into the work of EJF as possible, drawing from Georgetown’s impressive wealth of professors to help increase enthusiasm around fundraising events. Hailing from the “holy city” of Charleston, South Carolina, Austin has an affinity for warm beaches, the lovable Gamecocks, food that’s good for your soul but bad for your heart, and paisley bow ties.

Daniel Rozenzweig
Professor Outreach Co-Chair
Daniel has a strong interest in government, public policy, and regulatory law – particularly related to cybersecurity and privacy. As Co-Professor Outreach Chair, he hopes to connect EJF and its members to Georgetown’s faculty. Originally from Long Island, New York, he has a passion for the New York Yankees, the New York Knicks, all types of food, and of course… superheroes.

Joel Nolette

Silent Auction Co-Chair
Joel has a passion for contributing in whatever capacity to supporting those who want to follow their public interest dreams but find it prohibitively expensive to do so. He hopes to help increase funding by providing support as needed, particularly by streamlining and expediting the silent auction prize purchase and delivery process. Hailing from Western MA, he graduated in 2011 with a B.A. in Biblical Studies before going on to become a letter carrier with the USPS, leaving that in 2014 to come to GULC. His interests include Bob Dylan, Arrested Development, the Ninth Amendment, and spending quality time with good friends over even better food and spirits.

Chumma Tum
Silent Auction Co-Chair

Chumma has a background holding leadership positions in the Student Ambassadors program and Cavalier Daily Newspaper while attending the University of Virginia. As Silent Aution Co-Chair she hopes to bring her bright personality and can-do attitude to helping the organization expand the list of prizes for the auction and fundraise money to support those who are passionate about public service. Chumma grew up in Northern Virginia and enjoys exploring DC, trying new foods, crafting, and reading (non law-related) books.

Taylor Moustris
Live Auction Co-Chair
Taylor has a background in event planning and community service through her experience as Lead - Student Involvement Leadership Consultant and VP of Service of the Panhellenic Association while at UC San Diego. She has planned multiple, annual campus-wide events, in which she fundraised for key charities. As Co-Live Auction Chair, Taylor plans to increase campus involvement and attendance at the auction, while increasing more available funding for EJF. (She also hopes she can get everyone to dress up in theme for the auction, as Taylor loves dressing up and wearing costumes.) Taylor is from Los Angeles, California and naturally, she enjoys suntanning at the beach, eating sushi, and watching all sorts of reality TV - especially Real
Housewive of Beverly Hills.

Katelyn Sandoval
Live Auction Co-Chair
Katelyn served on a number of her sorority's committees while attending Arizona State, which offered her the ability to lead, supervise, create, and collaborate with other students and outside organizations to plan and implement events. Serving as co-chair for the Live Auction, Katelyn hopes to raise awareness about EJF, promote EJF's goal of raising money for students, and increase the invovlement and popularity of the Live Auction event. Katelyn is a native of Chandler, AZ and enjoys playing soccer, baking, watching football, and shopping.

Jenadee Nanini
Alumni Outreach Chair; Communications
Jenadee Nanini grew up in rural Montana and is a member of the Blackfeet tribe. Jenadee attended Washington State University for her undergraduate education, earning degrees in Economics (BS), Political Science (BA), and a third major in Philosophy. She was also a member of the Honors College. She spent a semester of her undergraduate education at Georgetown University while interning for Senator Edward Kennedy (D-MA) and Jon Tester (D-MT). Jenadee also volunteered locally on campus and in the community as well as abroad in Guatemala with Hearts in Motion. Jenadee served yearly as a mentor in the Native American Student Center and was involved in several volunteer and service organizations. After graduation, Jenadee served three years in West Dallas. She taught at a charter school for two years, teaching 6th and 8th grade math, serving as the math lead for the network, and coaching cheerleading and basketball. She then chose to spend a third year at a traditional high school in West Dallas (Pinkston, DISD) serving as the Math Department Chair and a member of the leadership team for the turn around school, teaching Algebra II, and coaching cheerleading. Jenadee also mentored with Mercy Street in the West Dallas community and worked on several service projects with her students. Currently, Jenadee is a rising 2L at Georgetown Law and has been working on two pro bono projects, serving as a Dean of Admissions Student Ambassador, the Equal Justice Foundation Alumni Chair, and is a member of several other campus organizations. Jenadee teaches human rights to youth at a non-profit in the Howard area every Wednesday night. Most recently, her students are advocating to prevent and stop human trafficking in DC and have been awarded the Presidential Volunteer Service Award as part of an entire organization for their work on human rights. Her students have proposed twelve laws and amendments to the DC Council and will continue this advocacy until the items are passed. Jenadee is an avid sports fan and in her free time she enjoys volunteering, talking with her students (from Dallas and in DC), spending time with her family, working out, and politics. When She is home in Montana, she loves Glacier Park and all the outdoor adventures Montana provides (fishing, hunting, hikes, etc.).

Shannon Mercer
Alumni Outreach Chair; Strategic Development
Shannon found her way from the Commonwealth of the
Nothern Mariana Islands to Georgetown via Princeton,
New York, finance and management consulting. Despite
her private sector history, she has maintained active involvement in her communities: serving as a Chairperson for Princeton's Community Action volunteer program, providing pro bono consulting services to social enterprise start-ups and working with attorneys in D.C. on civil rights litigation. As an alumni outreach co-chair she hopes to bring to bear her business skills in service of EJF's future - funding, an ecosystem of professional support, community building and culture. This is a marathon, not a sprint. EJF's success lies in the construction of a strong community, both inside and outside GULC, to guarantee continued support for progressive, public service work.

Lucas Rhoads
EJF Treasurer
Lucas has a background in environmental science and policy, with field research experience in invasive plant ecology and policy experience at the Department of Justice, Environment and Natural Resources Division. As treasurer, Lucas hopes to maximize the contribution EJF can make toward allowing fellow public-interest minded students an opportunity to explore and pursue their passion for a particular cause.

We are extremely grateful to come into this year with a strong foundation from the 22 years of diligent work before us, and eager to bring new momentum to the success of the Georgetown Law Equal Justice Foundation!

Looking forward, we need all the help we can get to make this year's efforts guarantee a robust fellowship funding for Public Interest summer positions- whether you are an incoming 1L, Alumni, Faculty, Parent, previous recipient of EJF funding or supportive community member you can help us serve this crucial cause!

Stay tuned for upcoming volunteer opportunities on campus and tickets for this year's Live Auction!

As always, donations go directly to student fellowships to support GULC tradition of service, any amount supports our mission to offer legal expertise in the public sector.
